Executive Summary

This biennial survey evaluates Americans’ awareness of potential financial risks in retirement, how this awareness impacts the management of their finances with respect to retirement, and how Americans are managing the process of leaving the workforce.

The survey has been conducted every two years since 2001 with a representative sample of retirees and pre-retirees aged 45-80. Each iteration of the survey includes a complete report of all findings along with several highlights reports that focus on a particular aspect of the survey. The highlights reports include perspectives from other sources to provide additional insights on the findings.

In addition to the findings of each iteration of the survey, the series overall provides an insightful historical record and quantitative measures of how the perception and experience of retirement has changed since the beginning of the millennium.
