Explore applications of static and dynamic optimization in two different ALM and hedging use cases. Insurers are increasingly moving offshore by establishing Bermuda captive reinsurers. In calculating the Bermuda Best Estimate Liability ('BEL'), reinsurers will need to segment assets to support liabilities in each treaty. A Linear Programming ('LP') problem can be formulated to tactically select assets in a way that minimizes the BEL and consequently the total asset requirement. Learn more about what US Variable Annuity Insurers face with the regulatory requirement to reflect 'future hedging strategy' in their statutory funding calculation. The traditional numerical method of finding the optimal hedging target and then allocating assets may encounter the curse of dimensionality with expanding product and economic environment complexity. In the US, Actuarial Guideline LIII (“AG53”) requires additional analysis & disclosure around the risks of structured, less liquid assets used to back insurance liabilities. In Bermuda, the implementation of Consultation Paper #2 includes several targeted requirements to capture lapse risk, asset behavioral risk, and liquidity risk in a more robust and dynamic way. These emerging requirements necessitate enhanced ALM modeling capabilities and a more holistic view of liquidity risk that incorporates both sides of the balance sheet. In this session, we will discuss these requirements, what companies are doing to fulfill them, and how their efforts feed into a broader improvement of the ALM function."

Description: FASB published LTDI requirements in 2018. The effective date for insurers who are SEC filers to publish US GAAP financials under LDTI is January 1, 2023. The effective date for non-public insurers is January 1, 2025. LDTI requires insurers to identify a new category of benefits called market risk benefits (MRBs) in insurance products. Broadly, variable annuity (VA) and fixed indexed annuity (FIA) guaranteed minimum death, accumulation, withdrawal, and income benefits fall under MRBs. Valuing MRBs requires calculating the liability on a fair value basis. Valuing FIA MRBs on a fair value basis can be complicated as several aspects of FIAs such as option budgets and policyholder behavior are driven by company management decisions and the competitive landscape.
