Description: The Survey of Emerging Risks has been successfully conducted in North America for 15 years, which provides a consistent report by tracking the opinions of risk managers on the emerging topics beyond the current business cycle with strategic plans over decades. For the first time the survey is also being specifically introduced in China and Greater Asia, with the aim of surveying the actuarial and risk management professionals' opinions on emerging risks in the local market. In relation to the Society of Actuaries, Greater Asia is defined as markets that participate in our Greater Asia Committee. These are additional areas outside of mainland China that include markets such as Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The survey is sponsored by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute and comprises both quantitative and qualitative questions in English and Chinese (Simplified). With a wide range of response options and allowing for anonymous comments, the survey results serve as a platform to share the risk views of local actuaries and risk managers in China and Greater Asia.

Description: The research provides a modeling framework for assessing the inundation risk of properties and their expected flood damages, thereby laying a foundation for flood insurance pricing. The researchers studied over 50 years of claims data from the National Flood Insurance Program with 2.5 million records and identify property characteristics that predict flood damages for inundated properties. The development of a private flood insurance market hinges on insurers’ ability to better understand and price flood risk. This research takes a closer look at flood risk modeling and flood insurance pricing.

Description: LIMRA, Reinsurance Group of America (RGA), the Society of Actuaries Research Institute (SOA), and TAI have collaborated on an ongoing effort to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the individual life insurance industry’s mortality experience and share the emerging results with the insurance industry and the public. This report documents a high-level analysis of the claims that have been reported through December 31, 2021. The results presented here are based on data from 32 companies representing approximately 72% of the individual life insurance in force for the experience period of the study.
