The fourth section proposes risk mitigation strategies for insurers to cope with either deflation or high inflation rates. 5. The fifth section describes a publicly available model that can be used to develop inflation/deflation projections under a regime switching format that can readily be adjusted to reflect current financial uncertainty. 6. Description: The Society of Actuaries has surveyed the U.S. retiree and pre-retiree populations every other year since 2001 regarding their understanding and management of post-retirement risks. In 2010 the Canadian Institute of Actuaries conducted a similar survey, providing a potential opportunity to gain additional insights into both the Canadian and U.S. populations by comparing the findings. This paper examines the similarities and differences in the results of the two surveys. The most important overall finding is that the results are very similar in both countries.

Performed by Stéphane Levert, FSA, FCIA, the study (available in French and English) estimated the future costs of the Canadian health care system, assessed the sustainability of the system over a 25-year horizon, and analyzed the implications of the changes to the Canada Health Transfer proposed on Dec. 19, 2011 by the federal government. The report summarizing the findings indicates that, without significant government intervention, the Canadian health care system in its current form is not sustainable.
