Number one, to estimate the growing level of statutory reserves that are being reinsured offshore, supported by Letters of Credit, as well as by assets held within a trust. Number two, to quantify the redundancy in the reserves due to the conservative nature of the required methodology, combined with the utilization of an outdated mortality table.

Description: As the title of this corner suggests, our industry has many challenges and issues yet to address. This article focuses on the directions for the industry and the Reinsurance Section, on multiple levels. At this year’s SOA Spring Meeting in New Orleans, we spent some time reviewing the strategy for the newsletters, both print and electronic, and identifying topic areas that would be of interest to section members. The section publishes an electronic newsletter, Re-News! on a timely basis as events or news items need to be distributed. The print newsletter will continue to be distributed twice a year.
