Description: In this introductory session, we set the stage for the Symposium’s entire ElderTech track. We’ve seen increasing technology adaptation by the elderly in many areas of their lives, including socializing, health care, mobility, home monitoring, insurance, investing and financial planning. Panelists will provide an overview of the current state of ElderTech and how they believe it will evolve in the short and long term. Panelists will also discuss the problems ElderTech is trying to solve, consumer pain points and why ElderTech has become so important recently.

Description: As we entered 2014, actuaries became familiar with three risk stabilizing mechanisms in the early years of the ACA marketplaces, colloquially known as 'the 3Rs'. As we enter 2024, there is renewed focus on rating compliance and risk adjustment. Speakers will highlight pricing considerations when determining cost-sharing reduction premium loads as well as related issues pertaining to risk adjustment and metal tier pricing.

Description: This session will cover the treatment of various forms of reinsurance under Valuation Manual-20 (VM-20). Speakers will discuss the implications of various types of reinsurance agreements on the calculation of principle-based reserves (PBR). This will include coinsurance and modified coinsurance, guaranteed and non-guaranteed yearly renewable term (YRT), as well as financial reinsurance.

Description: This session will focus on what is new and coming at the Appointed Actuary (e.g., Actuarial Guideline ((AG)) 53, equity testing, etc.). We will provide highlights from the updated AAT Practice Note. A particular focus will be paid to asset classes that have received regulatory attention recently (e.g., commercial mortgage loans, collateralized loan obligations ((CLOs)), etc.).

Description: Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the investment landscape. From natural language processing and large language models to physical AI applications like robotics, autonomous vehicles, and drones, the evolution of AI is reshaping both how we analyze data and where we find opportunity. We’ll begin by exploring the evolution of AI, which is already driving disruption across industries such as coding, customer service, and marketing. However, the future of AI is physical AI (drones, AVs, robotics). With valuations already stretched, and growing concerns about the “circular economy” and bubble risks, investors should focus on high-quality tech companies that generate free cash flow and deliver strong returns on invested capital. We'll explore examples of interesting companies across the globe: Meta, Alphabet, and Uber in the US; ASML in Europe; Tokyo Electron in Japan; TSMC in Taiwan; and BYD in China. The session will also examine how natural language processing and large language models are reshaping the way quantitative and fundamental managers extract insights from raw data. We’ll highlight how these tools are being deployed to enhance understanding of risk and return, and how they’re increasingly supporting collaboration between quant and fundamental teams.

Description: This session will be centered around the roles and responsibilities of a valuation actuary. Learn the best practices of health actuaries, along with technical considerations and professionalism issues surrounding the calculation and reporting of health liabilities and reserves. This session will focus on key actuarial liability and reserve provisions, including Claims Unpaid and Premium Deficiency Reserves. In this session, explore new ideas about calculation methods and the importance of the underlying assumptions. You will also learn best practices and practical applications concerning reserve calculation discuss best practices regarding the preparation of an actuarial memorandum supporting a Health Annual Statement. This will include key considerations from the American Academy of Actuaries' Practice Note about documenting and supporting the actuarial calculations. The discussion will also present views and considerations from both the insurer's and the regulator's perspectives.

Description: Climate change will lead to an increase in the frequency and severity of many weather-related hazards. In turn, these hazards will impact health outcomes for individuals. Explore examples of this connection with a climate scientist, including how the increase in wildfire severity in the western U.S. is expected to drive a 40% increase in organic carbon aerosols by 2050 and howheat stress will impact vulnerable populations and workers in non-air-conditioned environments. Investigating these relationships will increase literacy on disproportionate impacts of climate change-related health outcomes. Presenters will illustrate the disproportionate impacts by geographically analyzing climate change signals and comparing them with socioeconomic data. Last but not least, you will learn about the evolution in both voluntary and required disclosures for payors and the landscape of why understanding climate risk is relevant for many payors.
