It will discuss the three types of systemic biases using the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) model. The NIST model details the three types as historical bias, societal bias, and institutionalbias. The session will also provide several examples of each type to provide a framework for identifying the social structure of bias.

Description: Life insurance with LTC features is exciting business to produce, but the complex for a valuation actuary at year-end. This session will discuss setting morbidity and policyholder behavior assumptions for principles-based reserving and cash flow testing more generally. We will review considerations for GAAP reserving for hybrid products. We will highlight the interaction of assumptions whose risks offset (mortality, morbidity, lapse, and more) and how the valuation actuary may think of these in sensitivity testing and setting prudent estimates. Panelists will draw from the 2022 Academy of Actuaries Combination Product Valuation Practice Note.Finally, we will discuss reserve assumption setting in light of public-private LTC legislation (e.g. Washington Cares), which inspired sales of hybrid life and LTC products in the individual and worksite markets.

Description: As companies have reported their latest financials for 2023, LDTI is in its full swing for the public companies. Under US GAAP reinsurance accounting methods can be daunting. Add onto this legacy practices related to reinsurance reporting and this may lead to significant unwinding and implementation efforts. This session will discuss industry practices commonly applied to US GAAP reinsurance reported balances such that LDTI adopters can gather deeper insights into the LDTI impact. Specifically, the session will explain the two most popular methods to value reinsurance under LDTI, methods applying a direct measurement of the reinsurance net cost and a method that recognizes ceded asset balances and a cost of reinsurance (“CoRe”). The session will present simplified direct and ceded models to demonstrate how the actuarial balances under LDTI impact GAAP book profits for different underlying products and reinsurance types.

Description: The rapid evolution of life insurance underwriting has created pricing and operational challenges and raised new questions about established approaches to assumption development, both of which demand a fresh perspective. As underwriting methods evolve, we find ourselves navigating uncharted territory. In this session, we delve into accelerated underwriting, focusing on two critical areas. First, we explore assumption setting in this new world, where numerous interaction effects can make it feel like we’re asked to consider everything, from every angle, all at once. Considerations for assumption setting must encompass early performance indicators—what signals inform our assumptions? Additionally, we address novel underwriting approaches and how to adapt assumptions for these paradigms. Furthermore, in the context of post-COVID claims experience, we discuss distinguishing meaningful insights from noise. Second, we examine declinable risks and their impact on mortality. In this new world ushered in by accelerated underwriting, previously excluded risks—low-frequency, high-severity declinable cases—are now part of the landscape. Quantifying their mortality impact challenges us, as historical data lacks systematic tracking. To quantify declinable risks, we draw upon research findings from analyzing 27 million life insurance applicants, providing valuable insights for attendees to navigate this dynamic landscape and make informed assumptions for pricing and risk management.
