Description: As IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts casts its net wide, reinsurers find themselves sailing toward new horizons of financial reporting. The transition to IFRS 17 is not just a regulatory compliance exercise but a transformational journey that reshapes the financial reporting landscape for reinsurers. The enhanced disclosure requirements, the granular contract-level accounting, and the measurement consistency across different reinsurance contracts promise to unveil a clearer financial picture. Yet, these new reporting waters could be choppy, demanding a sturdy understanding and application of IFRS 17's principles. This article describes benchmarking of IFRS 17 information provided at HY 2023 for four reinsurers.

Description: The Society of Actuaries Financial Reporting Section is pleased to make available a new report examining the International Standards Board’s (IASB) Re-Exposure draft, Insurance Contracts, issued in June 2013. Performed by Rodrigo Careaga, Tara Hansen, Asad Khalid, and Bruce Rosner of Ernst & Young LLP, this study illustrates differences in earnings emergence for new business projections between current US GAAP and the proposed standard for a sample of 12 products. Additionally, it shows the impact on earnings emergence of various sensitivity tests.

Description: Insurance company financial reporting and performance measurement are going through a significant transformation. Insurers are beginning to look at their business based on what many refer to as the 'economic value framework.' This paper examines some of the recent changes in financial reporting for insurance contracts and then explores whether sufficient evidence exists to conclude whether a company has created value simply by the sale of an insurance contract [gain at issue], and also reviews the necessary disclosures needed to build market trust of 'next-generation' financial reporting. Specific issues related to the economic view of capital also are examined as well as some of the problems existing economic capital approaches present to the industry. This paper proposes a performance measurement approach that incorporates the market’s view of risk and the level of compensation the market demands to accept that risk.

Description: FASB has provided broad guidance for application of the targeted improvements in Actuarial Standards Update 2018-12 for U.S GAAP financial reporting. However, the broad guidance provided leads to several interpretation and modeling challenges for life insurance, annuity, disability and LTC products. The presenters focus these challenges and possible methods to address them. Audience participation is encouraged. Description: While most actuaries work for companies and have as a primary objective the financial success of their employers, regulatory actuaries primarily serve the public interest. In part one of this presentation, we will explore the role of actuaries whose priority is to serve the public interest. Regulation is developed by a deliberative process that includes regulators, the American Academy of Actuaries, trade associations and the companies that will be affected by the regulation. In part two of this session, we will present a series of vignettes each focusing on recent updates to the Valuation Manual. At the conclusion of the session, attendees will have a deeper appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes in the development of regulation.

This presentation will illustrate how the currently used KPIs may develop and evolve with the adoption and implementation of IFRS 17. Description: Since IFRS17 draft was issued in June 2019, IASB has discussed various important issues, such as the selection of B137 and the judgment to investment components. This session will be focused on the discussion and sharing of these aspects, to help understand the latest developments. At the same time, actuaries played an important role in the implementation of IFRS 17. The speaker will share the important work of actuaries in the implementation and application of IFRS 17 through the observation of the previous implementation process.
