Description: Mortality improvement assumptions have typically been focused on all-cause mortality improvement. However, as evidenced in recent years, the cause of death has a large impact on mortality improvement. Join our panel of experts as they discuss mortality improvement through the lens of different causes of death. This discussion will include a review of the historical cause specific mortality improvement trends seen in the U.S. population and how this relates to the insured population. The panelists will then discuss how to use these trends to inform future mortality improvement assumptions. Description: Mortality improvement for the U.S. general population has stagnated in recent years and then further deteriorated with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, mortality improvement by socioeconomic factors such as education and income has varied widely during this time period. Explore with us cause-of-death mortality rate trends as well as overall mortality improvement trends by different socioeconomic factors. Join a discussion on approaches that companies can take to proxy the insured population by applying socioeconomic factors to the general population with the goal of better understanding future mortality trends for the insured population.

Description: Future mortality improvement is an important assumption in the valuation of life insurance and annuities. In this session, presenters will discuss the work of the Mortality Improvement subgroup of the American Academy of Actuaries’ Life Experience Committee and the Society of Actuaries’ Preferred Mortality Oversight Group Valuation Basic Table Team in developing mortality improvement scales for AG-38 and VM-20. In addition, two recent SOA efforts on mortality improvement will be examined. Research on developing a broader framework for modeling mortality improvement assumptions is being developed to enable U.S. actuaries additional ways to follow a consistent approach across a variety of actuarial practice applications. Results from a study on U.S. population mortality by socioeconomic category and how it fits into the broader consistent framework will be presented. Additionally, results of a survey on mortality improvement practices of life insurance companies and reinsurers in Canada and the U.S. will be shared.

Description: In this introductory session, we set the stage for the Symposium’s entire ElderTech track. We’ve seen increasing technology adaptation by the elderly in many areas of their lives, including socializing, health care, mobility, home monitoring, insurance, investing and financial planning. Panelists will provide an overview of the current state of ElderTech and how they believe it will evolve in the short and long term. Panelists will also discuss the problems ElderTech is trying to solve, consumer pain points and why ElderTech has become so important recently.
