This session examines the current investment risk management practices such as product line specific hedging and macro hedging, with a focus on what still remains to be addressed—whether the tradeoff of addition risk management is worthwhile.

Description: Through much of the Baby Boomer generation's working lifetime, retirement planning focused on asset accumulation. Strategies like Dollar-Cost Averaging and Asset Diversification became well understood by nearly everyone in the retirement industry. As those assets move into the payout phase (post retirement), the appropriateness of those strategies becomes less clear. Presenters will aim to exhibit and explain how and why adding a Single Premium Immediate Annuity (SPIA) or Deferred Income Annuity (DIA) to a retirement portfolio can help to minimize a retiree's chance of outliving his or her income, and why sellers of annuities should focus more heavily on these product offerings. At the conclusion of the session, attendees will be able to - Identify the reasons why effective asset accumulation strategies may be ineffective in the decumulation phase of retirement - Evaluate the benefit of using at least a portion of accumulated retirement assets to purchase a fixed income stream that the annuitant is guaranteed not to outlive - Explain the benefits of a SPIA/DIA focus to other industry practitioners

Initially confined to regulatory reserving, increasingly companies are using the AAA/SoA generator for a wider and wider range of applications which in some cases may be at the limits of what it was designed for. How is the AAA/SoA generator being applied in reserving, risk management and variable annuity lines of business? What are some of the challenges actuaries face in using this framework and what are the options for addressing them.

Description: The baby boom generation continues to represent a tremendous opportunity for the financial services industry. Much of the industry attention is paid towards customers whose needs include wealth management, retirement, or wealth transfer/estate planning.However, there is a significant portion of that demographic that will require a solution that helps them with their final expenses (e.g. burial, credit card debt, medical bills, etc.). Currently, there is a good-sized market to service customers in this demographic representing $1.3 billion in new business premium in 2017 (according to LIMRA/LOMA). Steady growth is expected in this industry as there is a growing number of individuals who have not traditionally owned life insurance or can no longer afford premiums on existing products they may own. There are many different distribution strategies employed to reach customers in this market and each of them will be discussed during the session. Topics such as pre-need and guaranteed acceptance products will be included in this session. Underwriting approaches vary by carrier, as well, and this session will cover the pros and cons of each approach from both a new business point of view and the post-sale/rescission point of view.
