In order to maximize their impact, however, actuaries must pair strong technical skills with excellent communication skills. As their careers advance, the actuary's audience continues to broaden to include non-actuarial professionals from a variety of disciplines, senior executives, and customers. They must learn to communicate effectively with any audience that they are faced with. They must be able to make a compelling case for their point-of-view in a simple and succinct fashion. This highly interactive workshop is designed for actuaries at various levels to learn how to improve their communication skills by actively participating via polling and open forums.

Description: This session will examine bias from a social science perspective. It will discuss the three types of systemic biases using the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) model. The NIST model details the three types as historical bias, societal bias, and institutionalbias. The session will also provide several examples of each type to provide a framework for identifying the social structure of bias.

Description: As a college student decades ago, and now as an educator for more than a decade, I have always felt that the greatest challenge, both for myself and for my students, was the human limitation of how to learn more efficiently and master an ever-growing body of knowledge. The pride and sense of accomplishment that come after hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of study and practice have long been part of what defines us as professionals.
