Lapse experience is analyzed for whole life, term life, universal life, and variable universal life plans issued between 1918 and 2012. Results for most key policy and product factors are examined.

Description: To remain relevant, life insurers need to understand changing consumer behavior and the shifting sands of buying triggers. The presenters will look at consumer studies, both U.S. and global, that reveal changing behaviors that influence the decision to buy or not buy life insurance. They will look at four demographic and economic categories including Millennials, Generation X, Boomers and the Silent Generation and how these generational groups do or don't differ in their feelings and behaviors around life and health. The presenters will address new growth opportunities for companies that align their value proposition to these changing attitudes. They will explore opportunities around health and wellness to increase policy holder engagement and share insight into generational attitudes around wearables and the sharing of personal data.

Description: This report presents the results of a joint study conducted by the Society of Actuaries and LIMRA examining both premium persistency and surrender/lapse experience for flexible premium fixed universal life (“UL”), indexed universal life (“IUL”) and variable universal life (“VUL”) products. This work represents the first industry study of flexible premium life insurance premium persistency experience, a key risk impacting the profitability of both secondary guarantee products as well as products that are marketed and sold for traditional protection and savings accumulation purposes.
