Description: This article summarizes the second Simon Conference for young researchers in Actuarial Science, Risk Management, and Insurance, which took place at Michigan State University last November. The intent is to publicize the event and promote future participation in similar conferences of young researchers. Participation in the conference also gives professional development opportunity for practicing actuaries.

Description: On October 4–5, 2025, actuarial educators and researchers gathered in New Orleans for the Actuarial Mathematics and Actuarial Education Special Session at the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Fall Southeastern Sectional Meeting. The event brought together seventeen speakers from universities, professional societies, and industry to discuss the future of actuarial education, practical applications of actuarial methods, and advances in actuarial modeling. The session featured rich discussions on artificial intelligence in actuarial education, experiential learning through case studies, competency-based assessments, and industry-integrated research courses. Applications-focused talks addressed mortality shocks from COVID-19, disaster aid modeling, queuing systems, health and longevity metrics, healthcare reserving, flood risk in real estate, and value-based insurance contracts. The final segment highlighted advanced actuarial models, including optimal insurance with incentives, variable annuity hedging, extreme risk inference, AutoML for insurance, and privacy-preserving data collaboration. Overall, the session emphasized collaboration, innovation, and adaptability as essential for advancing actuarial science in an era of rapid technological and societal change.

Gen Re’s CI Data Insights Study, covering Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, highlights how advances in screening, especially for cancers, have influenced incidence rates and claims. Regular updates to CI definitions and product structures are essential for sustainability, as seen in the handling of thyroid and prostate cancers. Lifestyle factors like BMI also impact cardiovascular risk. A multi-dimensional approach combining robust data monitoring, proactive product updates, and wellness promotion ensures CI insurance remains relevant and sustainable.

Description: ALM keeps adapting. From duration-matching before 2008, to stress testing in the prolonged low-rate 2010s, to disintermediation risks in the sharp 2021–2023 rate hikes, each shock has reshaped the playbook. In my new paper, I argue for a practical way forward: matching the first 5–7 years of asset and liability cash flows and holding liquidity buffers, a balance between rigid full matching and simple duration management.

Description: As IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts casts its net wide, reinsurers find themselves sailing toward new horizons of financial reporting. The transition to IFRS 17 is not just a regulatory compliance exercise but a transformational journey that reshapes the financial reporting landscape for reinsurers. The enhanced disclosure requirements, the granular contract-level accounting, and the measurement consistency across different reinsurance contracts promise to unveil a clearer financial picture. Yet, these new reporting waters could be choppy, demanding a sturdy understanding and application of IFRS 17's principles. This article describes benchmarking of IFRS 17 information provided at HY 2023 for four reinsurers.
