Description: The presenters in this session will show attendees how to measure surplus risk for a corporate pension plan (or a pension plan where liabilities are valued on a current marked to market yield curve) in several different ways, understand the value of each of those methods, and use the results to make decisions on relevant corporate pension actions such as asset allocation and pension risk transfer. Description: Jacquelyn B. James, Ph.D. is director of the Center on Aging & Work and the Sloan Research Network on Aging & Work at Boston College; she is also a fellow in the Behavioral and Social Science Division of the Gerontological Society of America. Her research has focused on the meaning and experience of work, gender roles and stereotypes, adult development, perceptions of older workers and emerging retirement issues. Since 2014, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Dr. James has been building the Sloan Research Network on Aging & Work, a multi-disciplinary, international network. Dr. James, along with Dr. Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, edited a special issue of the journal, Work, Aging & Retirement—Change in the Meaning and Experience of Work in Life. James is past president of the Society for the Study of Human Development and serves on the editorial board of Work, Aging & Retirement.

Description: Starting with a review of recent VA and FIA industry policyholder behavior experience, this session will explore several critical elements in developing a sustainable and coherent framework to translate this complex experience data to assumption models, particularly for guarantee features such as GLWBs. The discussion will include the use of industry- and company-level data in building customized predictive models, and integrating models across behaviors such as income utilization and surrenders.

Description: Changes introduced by various Medicare Alternative Payment Models and the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) have accelerated an existing market trend of shifting some of what has traditionally been considered "insurance risk" to providers. The Provider Risk Sharing Boot Camp will give attendees deeper insights into methods, current thinking, and alternative solutions that actuaries can use to help providers understand and manage the financial and actuarial risks that they are taking, many for the first time.

Description: In reaction to a spate of model conversion activity and rising acceptance of model risk management techniques, many companies have, or are in the process of centralizing their modeling function to accommodate both governance and efficiency demands. These operating model changes have produced a wide range of questions and issues, such as division of labor, roles and responsibilities, selection of tasks to keep decentralized, among others. This session will frame a series of key considerations around modeling function consideration, and share lessons learned with the audience.

What forms and structures of reinsurance are available? Which VA Guarantee designs and features are easier to reinsure? Is reinsurance offered on both newly issued policies as well as in force/legacy books, and which vintages are difficult to reinsure? In an age of sophisticated hedging programs, what role does a reinsurer play in helping a VA writer manage this highly volatile risk? In this session, we will hear from a reinsurer that is actively writing new VA Guarantee reinsurance treaties in the U.S. and around the world, and from a VA writer that has successfully partnered with a reinsurer to enhance its VA product offering.
