Description: This session describes the process payers and employers can use to evaluate emerging medical device technologies, recent or pending FDA submissions for prescription drugs and experimental treatments that impact patient care, resource utilization and health care expenditures. We will walk through the process of identifying and selecting impactful treatments (Horizon Scanning) and quantifying the financial cost of new technologies before they arrive in the market. These workflows can be leveraged by actuaries, healthcare economists, clinicians and pharmacists from a payer (Commercial and Medicare) and employer perspective for self-funded plans. We will also walk through some sample models that illustrate how costs for emerging technologies and treatments can be modeled.

Inefficiency in healthcare system is a contributing factor. In this session, use cases on how AI is impacting the health insurance operations on 3 core challenges. Document processing: A lot of documents are generated in the healthcare ecosystem, medical reports, diagnosis, invoices etc. Currently most of the documents are still reviewed manually and rely heavily on users’ judgement. Customer engagement: Customers are generally under distress and feel rejected during the claim process. It is due to the time and process needed to get the information they look for, the gap between the sales and claims process, and the reimbursement amount. Claim settlements: Claim adjudication is a technical process that review the disease, treatment and policy coverage. The process is specific to disease and difficult to be generalized. Thus, the process is far from consistent and invites fraud, abuse and wastage in this area.

Description: Business success in the future depends on assumptions we make today. However, we operate in a dynamic environment and cannot know with certainty what lies ahead. Addressing the challenge requires a synergy between data science, expert judgement, and decision making to spot changing drivers of key risks and respond with appropriate business action. We will be presenting development of such an "ecosystem" technically enabled by Natural Language Processing to monitor and detect signals from news streams. NLP is of increasing importance for insurance companies. Additional application examples are available in session 23.
