Actuarial Education at Joint Mathematics Meetings

The actuarial education session of the 2007 Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio, Texas met on Friday, January 5, at 5:00 p.m.

The session was organized by Robert Buck (Slippery Rock University), Bettye Anne Case (Florida State University), Matt Hassett (Arizona State University), and Steve Paris (Florida State University). The topic for the session was "Issues Related to Creating and Maintaining an Actuarial Science Program". An expert panel consisting of Robert Buck, Bettye Anne Case, Thomas Pate (Auburn University), and Debbie Shepherd (Louisiana State University–Shreveport) answered questions posed by the moderator, Steve Paris, and also from the audience.

The session was well attended with over 50 people present, many actively participating in the audience/panel question and answer period. There are plans to compile an "FAQ" from the questions and answers that were presented at the session, and to make that information available to actuarial educators on the BeAnActuary.org Web site.

Plans are already underway for the actuarial education session at the 2008 Joint Mathematics Meetings, to be held in San Diego, California, January 6–9, 2008.
