Life insurers can leverage asset-intensive reinsurance to achieve full risk transfer of both biometric risks and market risks, therefore enhancing capital efficiency. Aside from recognizing capital benefits and front-loading value of in-force through transactions with 3rd party reinsurer, many life insurers globally have explored setting up affiliated reinsurers or sidecar reinsurers in the offshore jurisdictions, which often involves the active participation of an asset manager or a 3rd party capital provider, such as private equity firms, to assist with capital investment as well as investment capabilities, thereby to improve the performance of the underlying asset-intensive reinsured blocks.
