June 2025 SOA Board of Directors Meeting Recap

During the weekend of June 21-22 in Dallas, Texas, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Board of Directors (Board) came together to advance several strategic initiatives and examine key strategies central to the SOA’s future direction. Highlights include Board-approved governance changes heading to an October vote, the approval for the creation of a new task force on the candidate pipeline, and discussions on university-earned credit access. Strategies on AI, the Research Institute and global dynamics were also explored.

Strengthening Board Governance: The Board approved a set of recommendations to strengthen the SOA’s governance structure and better reflect the evolving needs of its members, employers and the public. These changes position the Board for future readiness by incorporating diverse perspectives, aligning skills and expertise with organizational priorities, and creating a smaller, more agile Board to support the long-term success of the organization, the actuarial profession and SOA members. This proposal will move forward to a membership vote in October.

Optimizing the Candidate Pipeline: One of the key priorities that shape the SOA’s work is to optimize the candidate pipeline. The SOA seeks to strengthen the profession by attracting, retaining and supporting candidates throughout their journey. The next step forward is the Board’s approval to establish a dedicated task force to review the ASA pathway. This task force will be chartered and recruited over the next couple of months to begin their work.

Access to University-Earned Credit: The Board reviewed the results of market testing for a new model that would expand the University-earned Credit (UEC) program. A diverse group of universities from multiple global regions previewed the model and gave positive feedback.

Strategies: The Board considered a range of AI-driven scenarios to anticipate potential disruptions that could impact the organization or the profession, including how to proactively respond and test approaches to ensure adaptability and resilience. Building on past reviews that shaped direction, the Board discussed a comprehensive analysis of the Research Institute’s current programs, strategic themes, leading practices, and how to incorporate member input for future opportunities. The Board also explored the approach to global markets, including how the SOA is evolving to continue meeting the needs of our stakeholders around the world.

In addition to the meeting, Board members and staff also participated in entertaining teambuilding activities and enjoyed the beautiful Texas weather with dinner and fellowship.
