Society of Actuaries Announces New Centers of Actuarial Excellence: Nanyang Technological University and the University of California, Santa Barbara

Schaumburg, IL, June 23, 2022 – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) has recognized Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara) in the U.S., as Centers of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). These two universities join the ranks of 35 other CAEs around the world.

To qualify for the CAE designation, university and college programs must meet eight criteria and specific requirements. These criteria include appropriate degree and curriculum offerings, graduate count, faculty composition, quality of graduates, appropriate integration with other areas of study, connection to industry, and research and professional involvement. Universities retain the CAE designation for a five-year period, renewable subject to compliance with the CAE criteria.

“The SOA is proud to now include the actuarial programs from Nanyang Technological University and UC Santa Barbara on our esteemed list of CAEs. This prestigious designation recognizes the achievements of these institutions in providing well-rounded education to future actuaries,” noted Eileen Luxton, FSA, FCIA, Chair, CAE Evaluation Committee. “Nanyang Technological University is the first CAE-recognized actuarial science program in Singapore, and UC Santa Barbara is the first on the U.S. West Coast. Programs such as the ones offered by these universities help prepare actuarial candidates to successfully pursue their careers, and we anticipate productive collaboration with both universities to foster and support the future of the actuarial profession.”

There are now 37 universities that hold the CAE designation. These include 20 universities in the U.S., four in Australia, eight in Canada, two in Hong Kong, plus one each in China, the United Kingdom and now Singapore. See the online listing of universities and colleges with actuarial programs.
