The Economic Measurement of Medical Errors

Research Projects – Health

The Society of Actuaries' Health Section is pleased to make available a research report measuring the annual frequency of medical errors in the United States and the total measurable cost to the United States economy of these errors. This effort is based upon an analysis of an extensive health care claim database and supplementary information.

The report was authored by Jon Shreve, Jill Van Den Bos, Travis Gray, Michael Halford, Karan Rustagi, and Eva Ziemkiewicz of Milliman, Inc.
