As the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared its end as a global health emergency, the focus of insurers and reinsurers turns to the possibility of future pandemics. Key to considering possible future pandemics is assessing what is needed to model pandemic risks. Description: The purpose of this survey is to gather a high-level view of U.S. Group Term Life Insurance mortality results during the COVID-19 pandemic, as compared to prior period baseline mortality results. The datasets for this report encompass all Group Term Life claims reported to participating carriers as of August 31, 2020. The Committee is grateful that 20 of the top 21 U.S. Group Term Life insurers are participating in this survey, with market share representing roughly 90% of the industry.

The actual deaths used are as reported by the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) and we consider several different methods for setting the expectations, adjusting for the estimated mix by age, sex, and time of the year (seasonality).

Description: Our understanding of the biology of aging is increasing rapidly, creating insight into how and why any organism is aging. Some of the mechanisms by which the process of aging occurs in mammals are sufficiently well understood that clinical trials targeting them in humans to improve later life health and longevity are now being undertaken. Translating results seen in mammals to humans has the potential to increase life expectancy far beyond what we have seen historically. Come explore the current state and outlook of research.
