Description: Amid the growing adoption of AI/ML models for underwriting and pricing, Life and Annuity carriers are facing increasing regulation in North America on Model Risk Management (MRM) and the use of AI. Colorado has set a precedent in the US by requiring reporting in June 2024, with other states looking to follow suit. To ensure compliance, Chief Risk Officers and Heads of MRM, working with their business partners, will need to evolve their MRM and AI risk frameworks, enhance model validation capabilities, and strengthen governance. Description: In this session, we will explore recent industry-wide studies focusing on mortality and policyholder behavior patterns across both Life and LTC lines of business. The Life study analyzes extensive data collected over 2018-2022, providing a unique perspective on trends heading into, during, and emerging from the pandemic. The study covers 2.5 million deaths and over 5 million voluntary surrenders and fund lapses across term and permanent life products. The LTC analysis will focus on the components of policyholder termination, with an additional perspective of total termination patterns prior to, during and post-pandemic periods. The analysis will examine cohorts of policyholders to identify the area of largest deviations from expectation and how that translated into short term results as well as where we are today. The aggregation of experience across participating companies provides insights into areas where a particular insurer’s data is not credible on its own, including: older ages, preferred/standard classes and more. At the conclusion, attendees will have an understanding of how experience emerged and considerations for setting assumptions going forward.

Description: The SOA Research Institute's Aging and Retirement Strategic Research program focuses on a variety of stakeholders: individuals, benefit plan sponsors and administrators, financial service companies and society at large. The program partners with other SOA Research Institute strategic research programs, and it also partners with outside organizations. It builds on 25 years of work from the Committee on Post-Retirement Needs and Risks and many of its projects have a multi-disciplinary focus. The program aims to respond to the needs of stakeholders by assessing societal challenges and helping find solutions in a changing world. This session presents an overview of the work of the program, including key findings of research reports from the program, consumer education, and related work the SOA Research Institute is doing in this area.

Description: There are a variety of regulatory changes that are being contemplated by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) that have the potential to materially impact actuarial, statutory reporting and disclosure requirements relating to reinsurance. This session will provide an introduction to these changes, explaining both the motivation as well as the potential impact these proposed changes may have on US ceding companies. The focus of the presentation will be primarily on changes affecting Asset Adequacy Testing and statutory risk transfer for combination Coinsurance / Yearly Renewable Term agreements. An update will be provided regarding industry responses to proposed changes and the potential timing for implementation of these new requirements.

Description: Speakers representing investment and risk management teams share how they are integrating climate risks into their investment management practices. We will discuss methods to measure and assess climate risks in the investment portfolio, for both transition risks and physical risks. Speakers will also touch on how climate risks can be integrated into the bottom-up investment process. Lastly, we discuss climate-action-oriented programs to decarbonize investment portfolios and their challenges.
