Description: Open source programming languages have become a common part of the actuarial toolkit over the years. Using tools like R and Python, highly technical actuaries can automate onerous processes, easily work with massive amounts of data, create models and generate reports. Although these tools excel at turbo-charging analysts, it can be difficult for benefits to inure to the rest of the organization given the learning curve (“Can’t you just put this in Excel?”), control risks (“So your entire process could break overnight if some random person in Nebraska changes something?”), and internal IT environments. Listen in on a panel discussion where presenters share their personal stories of working with open source in a production setting. Hear about real world business problems, how open source tools were used, what risks were present, how they were overcome and the final business result.

Description: Because of the short-term nature of most health insurance products, the sophistication of insurers’ capital modeling tends to lag that of longer tailed life insurers. Additionally, some health insurers treat required capital modeling as a compliance exercise. However, there is considerable value to insurers who take more thoughtful approaches to capital modeling and integrate their capital modeling outcomes into the strategic decision-making process. Gain an overview of common required capital measures, including the advantages and disadvantages of each, and see a demonstration on how some capital measures are deficient for strategic decision-making. In the second half of the session, you will examine a case study of the considerations, design, implementation, challenges and outcomes of integrating a complex economic capital model into the strategic decision-making process.

Examine recent developments in PFML benefits, for example, the presenters will provide information on which states are introducing or considering PFML programs, what types of benefits are provided, what types of data is available to monitor experience, and what challenges programs have encountered.

Description: Indexed Universal Life ('IUL') has commanded a substantial share of life insurance sales since it was first introduced nearly 25 years ago. Even today, despite rising interest rates, IUL remains popular. It was one of the only products whose sales grew in 2022. Today's IUL products bear only passing resemblance to those offered when the product was first introduced, with updates to product design driven by regulatory and economic changes.
