The first part is intended to deliver a basic understanding of IBNR reserving and different reserving methods and assumptions. We will go through examples of constructing claims triangles and developing completion factors, while exploring concepts such as seasonality, trend and outlier claims. During the second part of the session, we will apply the material from the first part to look at various example from different products such as inpatient, outpatient, RX, Medicare Supplement, dental, critical illness, etc.

Description: This session will look into life insurers’ anticipated business impacts as a result of the implementation of the new accounting standard for insurance contracts, IFRS 17. What will be the financial impact as of day one as a result of transition? How will embedded value for common life insurance products change? How will costs of reinsurance be affected? Will products have to be re-designed and/or re-priced? IFRS 17 may have more ramifications into the way insurers are doing business than we have anticipated so far. While we are working on the implementation of this new standard, we should not lose sight of the business impacts that will follow. Description: These are the slides that go with the paper 'Mortality Modeling using Projection Pursuit Regression.' In that paper, the authors develop sixteen separate mortality models based on the current SOA mortality data being used for the preferred life study. The models are constructed using projection pursuit regression. The sixteen models arise from all combinations of sex, smoker status, select and ultimate status, and per life vs. per dollar mortality rates. In general the models confirm the following four facts: 1 Mortality rates increase as attained age increases. 2 Mortality rates increase as duration increases. 3 Mortality rates decrease as Face Amount Bands increase. 4. Mortality rates decrease if preferred underwriting is present.

The Bloomberg Barclay’s U.S. Corporate Bond Index, representative of the U.S. corporate bond market, now measures over $5 trillion, nearing its all-time high compared to its $2 trillion mark in 2008. The BBB-rated segment of the index has experienced significant growth, and now represents more than 50% of the corporate bond market. Corporate bond market risk has increased beyond what the ratings indicate. Today's investing landscape of relatively low yields, higher corporate leverage and a later-stage credit cycle presents challenges for both insurance and pension portfolios where corporate bonds are a core investment. <br> <br>With representation from a U.S. portfolio manager, Canadian portfolio manager and an investment consultant, attendees will get a full perspective of the North American environment and how to apply this information when making client recommendations.
