Description: In this introductory session, we set the stage for the Symposium’s entire ElderTech track. We’ve seen increasing technology adaptation by the elderly in many areas of their lives, including socializing, health care, mobility, home monitoring, insurance, investing and financial planning. Panelists will provide an overview of the current state of ElderTech and how they believe it will evolve in the short and long term. Panelists will also discuss the problems ElderTech is trying to solve, consumer pain points and why ElderTech has become so important recently.

Description: As we entered 2014, actuaries became familiar with three risk stabilizing mechanisms in the early years of the ACA marketplaces, colloquially known as 'the 3Rs'. As we enter 2024, there is renewed focus on rating compliance and risk adjustment. Description: This session will cover the treatment of various forms of reinsurance under Valuation Manual-20 (VM-20). Speakers will discuss the implications of various types of reinsurance agreements on the calculation of principle-based reserves (PBR). This will include coinsurance and modified coinsurance, guaranteed and non-guaranteed yearly renewable term (YRT), as well as financial reinsurance.

Description: This session will focus on what is new and coming at the Appointed Actuary (e.g., Actuarial Guideline ((AG)) 53, equity testing, etc.). We will provide highlights from the updated AAT Practice Note. A particular focus will be paid to asset classes that have received regulatory attention recently (e.g., commercial mortgage loans, collateralized loan obligations ((CLOs)), etc.).

Description: Our panelists will explore fixed income topics from an actuarial perspective. We'll start with the basics of bonds, including sensitivity measures like duration and higher moments. Then, we'll discuss bond ALM characteristics, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating various bonds into a portfolio. Finally, we'll cover actuarial modeling considerations, such as reinvestments, defaults, expenses, and other assumptions. Description: In this talk, we look at two behavioral aspects: from end customers perspective and through the lens of underwriters. We will examine simple rules to improve the insurance underwriting decision to judge whether a risk is insurable and whether they have impact on increasing underwriting decision quality.

Description: Life insurance with LTC features is exciting business to produce, but the complex for a valuation actuary at year-end. This session will discuss setting morbidity and policyholder behavior assumptions for principles-based reserving and cash flow testing more generally. We will review considerations for GAAP reserving for hybrid products. We will highlight the interaction of assumptions whose risks offset (mortality, morbidity, lapse, and more) and how the valuation actuary may think of these in sensitivity testing and setting prudent estimates. Panelists will draw from the 2022 Academy of Actuaries Combination Product Valuation Practice Note.Finally, we will discuss reserve assumption setting in light of public-private LTC legislation (e.g. Washington Cares), which inspired sales of hybrid life and LTC products in the individual and worksite markets.
