Description: The proposed session will introduce Outcome Based Risk Sharing Arrangements (“OBRSA”) between health insurance payers (“payers”, including insurance companies, health plans, sponsored employers, and government programs) and pharmaceutical manufacturers (“pharma”), and it’s intended to meet the needs of actuaries who focus on pharmacy benefits and risk sharing arrangements. The covered content will include (1) the background of OBRSAs, definitions, stakeholders, and OBRSA’s role in shifting the system from volume-based toward value-based; (2) conflicting perspectives about OBRSAs between payers and pharma (cultural and methodological); (3) identification of incentive gaps between payers and pharma, and incentive alignment between them; (4) barriers to implement OBRSAs; (5) limitations and considerations of OBRSA implementation; and (5) hypothetic OBRSA examples.

Description: The presenters will dig into the little rider that most actuaries don't spend much time thinking about. A regulator, a direct writer and a consultant will discuss their thoughts on this rider and point out areas where actuaries should focus before deeming it insignificant. Topics will include the current study underway to update the industry experience study (most recently done in 1952), underwriting considerations, interactions with other riders, benefit designs, unique issues on UL policies, tax implications and reserving considerations

Description: In the first part of this series, the presenters will provide the results of a recent SOA multi-country survey on mortality improvement practices of life insurance companies. In the second part of this session, they will discuss the issues and solutions related to the development of the most recent RPEC mortality improvement assumptions.

Description: Climate change is making a significant economic impact into the work that actuaries do. Actuaries working in general insurance have been at the forefront of this work for many years. Now, actuaries in investments, pensions, life and health insurance as well as enterprise risk management are considering the risks of climate change and quantifying the impact of climate change in their modeling. Actuaries can expect to hear of these developments in actuarial circles with speakers representing the Society of Actuaries, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, the Casualty Actuarial Society, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) and/or the International Actuarial Association.

Description: Jacquelyn B. James, Ph.D. is director of the Center on Aging & Work and the Sloan Research Network on Aging & Work at Boston College; she is also a fellow in the Behavioral and Social Science Division of the Gerontological Society of America. Her research has focused on the meaning and experience of work, gender roles and stereotypes, adult development, perceptions of older workers and emerging retirement issues. Since 2014, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Dr. James has been building the Sloan Research Network on Aging & Work, a multi-disciplinary, international network. Dr. James, along with Dr. Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, edited a special issue of the journal, Work, Aging & Retirement—Change in the Meaning and Experience of Work in Life. James is past president of the Society for the Study of Human Development and serves on the editorial board of Work, Aging & Retirement.

Description: The objective of this report is to provide benchmarking information that will help companies address the needs of internal stakeholders in cost-effectively conducting and implementing an ORSA process. In order to obtain this benchmarking information, a cross-disciplinary survey was conducted to find out what insurance companies understand and expect from an ORSA, the effort required to complete an ORSA, and the benefits from doing so. This survey was undertaken on a global basis, with participants that included life, property and casualty (P&C), often referred to as "non-life" or "general" insurers in territories such as Europe, and health insurance companies in North America (the United States and Canada), Europe, and Asia.
