Description: This study was undertaken to review pooled companies’ mortality experience on cases reported to the Medical Information Bureau, MIB, with findings suggesting an increased probability of ethanol related complications or hepatic dysfunction. The study examines the mortality associated with evidence of excessive alcohol use, an adverse driving record or abnormalities of the liver function tests.

Description: The Health Section Research Team is pleased to make available the following research study and Excel model that provide a framework for estimating the financial impact of health plan provider network risk. The research was conducted by the Denver office of Milliman, Inc. The Excel workbook allows the user to assess cost implications of aspects of network risk under various assumptions. The assumptions in the workbook can be altered by the user and be applied to test a range of scenarios.

Description: The attached report presents the results of a survey whose purpose was to explore the various uses of technology by life insurance companies. The survey was conducted by the Technology Survey Subcommittee of the Society of Actuaries Life Insurance Mortality and Underwriting Survey Committee. The primary focus of this survey was the impact of technology on mortality studies and underwriting.

Description: The Society of Actuaries released research in 2007 that develops a model for a U.S. individual life insurance company to consider its potential liability exposure as a result of a pandemic. Sponsored by the Mortality and Longevity Strategic Research Program Steering Committee, this paper updates several model assumptions including mortality in light of COVID-19.

Description: Recognizing an opportunity to help serve its members in this age of increased financial oversight, the Health Section of the Society of Actuaries commissioned a series of guides on the use of statistical techniques specifically geared for the work of health actuaries. In this first guide in the series, the topic is an estimate well-known to health actuaries- the calculation of incurred but not reported [IBNR] health claims reserves. In particular, this guide focuses on the development of confidence intervals around IBNR estimates.
