Underlying this is how we finance the cost of specialized housing, care and support. Some communities are age-friendly where we can obtain supportive services, others are not. Some people choose to live in senior housing which integrates support services, others choose to live in the community among people of all ages. Some health care systems are well designed to meet the needs of older people, others are not. The cost of living for older adults, considering all of these factors, varies by community. Explore more about the perspective of older adults, how communities have structured to meet their needs, and how society as a whole is becoming aware of and addressing a growing aging population.

We’ve seen increasing technology adaptation by the elderly in many areas of their lives, including socializing, health care, mobility, home monitoring, insurance, investing and financial planning. Panelists will provide an overview of the current state of ElderTech and how they believe it will evolve in the short and long term. Panelists will also discuss the problems ElderTech is trying to solve, consumer pain points and why ElderTech has become so important recently.

Description: EHRs are a source of digital health data that present both an opportunity and a challenge for insurers. These rapidly maturing data sources contain valuable insights and can create a faster, better applicant experience, but the costs can quickly add up. Listen to panelists discuss various use cases for EHRs, their protective value in relation to traditional underwriting approaches, and other considerations for expanding EHR use. We will take a look at how using EHRs could promote a smart ordering approach allowing us to be quicker and more cost effective, all while understanding the impact to mortality.

Description: As we step out of a historical pandemic that put words like life expectancy and mortality rate on everyone's vocabulary, we suffer some measure of intellectual PTSD. This dark period magnifies our cognitive bias as we try to understand future mortality, a key variable both for life insurance and pension plans. Does our propensity to quantify and the attractiveness of new predictive modeling tools cloud our judgment? Check out a reflection framework and insights on scientific discoveries that will allow you to develop plausible scenarios that will enrich your thought process. The panelist will start by presenting what is new when we think about future mortality. We will then facilitate the generation of plausible scenarios by the audience and explain how we evaluate them. There will be no answers, but the relevance of your mortality questions will definitely improve.

Description: LDTI requires that reinsurance recoverables be recognized in a manner consistent with the liabilities of underlying direct contracts. Consider implications of multiple ceded reinsurance contracts (e.g., coinsurance and YRT on the same business) and how this impacts the calculation of the net premium ratio (NPR) and other related approximations. Explore different options when only some of the policies within a cohort are reinsured. Multiple interpretations of the components of the NPR formula exist. Two main approaches will be presented-standalone and integrated approach. Other considerations to be discussed include implications of closed-block reinsurance transactions at transition and subsequent to transition, contra-DAC, market risk benefits. Finally, explore the short-duration YRT approximation (1/2 Cx) compared to the long-duration calculation.

Description: Behavioral Science is a powerful tool to enhance customer experience and improve outcomes across the life insurance value chain. This session will cover the foundations of behavioral concepts in a life insurance context and discuss practical areas that can benefit from behavioral science including customer engagement, disclosure, and retention. The session will leverage recent SOA research and specific experience in communication campaigns and call center best practices to translate theory to quantified results. Attendees will leave with an appreciation for potential challenges and practical steps to measure and demonstrate the value of implementing behavioral science.

BlackRock will present results from its Peer Risk Study, which models industry holdings based on statutory filings at the CUSIP level. Through the Aladdin risk modeling software, expect a production of deep insights into insurer portfolio risk and return characteristics, as well as exploring how they have evolved. Description: As companies have reported their latest financials for 2023, LDTI is in its full swing for the public companies. Under US GAAP reinsurance accounting methods can be daunting. Add onto this legacy practices related to reinsurance reporting and this may lead to significant unwinding and implementation efforts. This session will discuss industry practices commonly applied to US GAAP reinsurance reported balances such that LDTI adopters can gather deeper insights into the LDTI impact. Specifically, the session will explain the two most popular methods to value reinsurance under LDTI, methods applying a direct measurement of the reinsurance net cost and a method that recognizes ceded asset balances and a cost of reinsurance (“CoRe”). The session will present simplified direct and ceded models to demonstrate how the actuarial balances under LDTI impact GAAP book profits for different underlying products and reinsurance types.
