Description: Critical factors to consider as we age include where we live, who we interact with, how we get the help and support we need when we need it, and how our health care is organized and delivered. Underlying this is how we finance the cost of specialized housing, care and support. Some communities are age-friendly where we can obtain supportive services, others are not. Some people choose to live in senior housing which integrates support services, others choose to live in the community among people of all ages. Some health care systems are well designed to meet the needs of older people, others are not. The cost of living for older adults, considering all of these factors, varies by community. Explore more about the perspective of older adults, how communities have structured to meet their needs, and how society as a whole is becoming aware of and addressing a growing aging population.

Description: In this introductory session, we set the stage for the Symposium’s entire ElderTech track. We’ve seen increasing technology adaptation by the elderly in many areas of their lives, including socializing, health care, mobility, home monitoring, insurance, investing and financial planning. Panelists will provide an overview of the current state of ElderTech and how they believe it will evolve in the short and long term. Panelists will also discuss the problems ElderTech is trying to solve, consumer pain points and why ElderTech has become so important recently.

Description: One common barrier to employing GLM modeling is the lack of sufficient data. This limitation often comes from the combination of the considerations in ASOP No. 25 “Credibility Procedures” and the fact that GLMs assign full credibility to the data. Explore the possibilities of credibility-based regression by expanding the intended purpose of modeling analysis from producing a single model as output to producing data insights, credible differences, and a range of reasonable models.

Description: The United Kingdom makes public an impressive body of data about its population, its health system (the NHS), and the care which the NHS provides to the nation. This session will take the audience on a tour of many of these sets - with a focus on uncovering healthcare disparities. For context, a brief description of the NHS in England, population characteristics of England, and how social determinants of health (SDOH) are quantified will be given. With these as a background, we will explore data on chronic disease prevalence and incidence as well as physician performance against targets. We will present examples of health disparities from this data for certain conditions. Datasets of UK prescribing will be shown for further detail. The closing portion of this talk will present similar public domain US data - and how the UK body of information can assist in understanding health disparities in the US.

Description: In this session, we will explore recent industry-wide studies focusing on mortality and policyholder behavior patterns across both Life and LTC lines of business. The Life study analyzes extensive data collected over 2018-2022, providing a unique perspective on trends heading into, during, and emerging from the pandemic. The study covers 2.5 million deaths and over 5 million voluntary surrenders and fund lapses across term and permanent life products. The LTC analysis will focus on the components of policyholder termination, with an additional perspective of total termination patterns prior to, during and post-pandemic periods. The analysis will examine cohorts of policyholders to identify the area of largest deviations from expectation and how that translated into short term results as well as where we are today. The aggregation of experience across participating companies provides insights into areas where a particular insurer’s data is not credible on its own, including: older ages, preferred/standard classes and more. At the conclusion, attendees will have an understanding of how experience emerged and considerations for setting assumptions going forward.

Description: In this talk, we look at two behavioral aspects: from end customers perspective and through the lens of underwriters. We will examine simple rules to improve the insurance underwriting decision to judge whether a risk is insurable and whether they have impact on increasing underwriting decision quality.
