Description: The Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and Society of Actuaries (SOA) engaged RGA Reinsurance Company (RGA) to undertake a research project on level premium term life insurance products with a particular focus on the magnitude and impact of the “shock lapse” at the end of the level premium period. This project is similar to the SOA-sponsored research completed by RGA in 2014 for USA business.

Description: For insurers to preserve and create value, they must understand their exposure to carbon and climate risks and develop decarbonization strategies. Transition plans facilitate this by encouraging organizational thinking and disclosure to the market. 2023 is a crucial year for progress on these initiatives amid evolving regulatory expectations. This session will provide an overview of the transition planning process, value creation and drivers identification, and how to incorporate these into transition and resiliency strategies. As part of climate risk mitigation strategies during transition and beyond, we will present a data and technology framework for insurers to more effectively manage climate risk. In particular, we will discuss dynamic climate risk management (DCRM) solutions which use data and technology to inform adaptation and resilience. Emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, and blockchain can also help insurers manage risks related to climate change more effectively. By attending the session, attendees will learn how to develop transition plans, adopt DCRM solutions and leverage emerging technologies to build resilience against the challenges caused by climate change.

Description: This session will kick off the key National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) activities with a primary focus on updates to principle-based reserve valuations and appointed actuary topics. Hear insights into the current set of activities and initiatives being considered and/or adopted by the NAIC Life Actuarial Task Force (LATF) and the NAIC Risk Based Capital Working Group as well as Actuarial Standards Board. In addition, other actuarial practice issues and other appointed actuary and opinion topics relevant to life insurance, variable annuities and fixed annuities will be discussed. By the end of the session, attendees will understand what changes are being made to reserves, RBC, PBR and actuarial standards and related topics, and the anticipated timing of such emerging changes.

Description: Much of the work performed by disability insurance actuaries depends on the availability of accurate and detailed data, which is not always as simple as it sounds. Explore a variety of data challenges faced by disability actuaries, along with potential solutions. Potential topics include finding relevant data, the impact of poor data on valuation work, the impact of new privacy rules, and the potential bias in the data used to develop predictive models.

Description: CMS launched the value-based insurance design (VBID) model in 2017, allowing health plans to offer innovative supplemental benefits and incentives to beneficiaries to use high-value services specific to their health care needs or socioeconomic position. CMS's stated goal is to encourage health plans to implement strategies that focus on health equity. The model has evolved over time and has grown tremendously in popularity over the years since it was introduced.
