The Social Insurance and Public Finance Section, and the International Section co-sponsored a research effort that is focused on paid family and medical leave programs (PFML) in the US and around the world. The primary goal is to identify the features and actuarial considerations of international PFML programs and how lessons learned from them can help shape developing programs in the US. The results of the research includes a summary of the programs and illustrates the range of benefits.

Bruce Schobel, FSA, MAAA, breaks down the changes to Social Security for 2026.

The LTC Population Research Model was developed to examine potential impacts of LTC benefits made available through public finance approaches at the federal level.

The Conference of Consulting Actuaries (CCA) Public Plans Community (PPC) released a second edition of their 2014 white paper “Actuarial Funding Policies and Practices for Public Pension Plans.”  The second edition reflects, among other things, “updates to Actuarial Standards of Practice and nearly a decade of experience applying the guidance from the original white paper as well as emerging practices.”  Click here to access the white paper.

The Social Security Trust funds will be able to pay 100% of total scheduled benefits until 2034, one year earlier than reported last year. View the 2025 Social Security Report.

Due to assumed higher health care expenditures in the near term, the Medicare HI trust fund is expected to pay 100% of total scheduled benefits until 2033, three years earlier than reported in the previous year.
