Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Administration

All SOA-administered CBT exams use Prometric Computer-Based Testing Centers as their primary testing method. (Note: CBT GIINT is administered through The Institutes. See the GIINT home page for more information.)

There are select/limited exam locations where there is no ability to test via a Prometric Computer-Based Testing Center. More information on these locations can be found on each exam home page. (**P/P GIINT is still administered through the SOA.)

Special Center Requests

In any remote location, the candidate has the responsibility of securing the services of a supervisor and examination facilities acceptable to the SOA.

If using a special center, please DO NOT register for an exam until your special center has been approved.

Supervisor Qualifications

Learn who is qualified to be a supervisor for an exam by reviewing the Supervisor Qualifications

Exam Room Requirements

Examinations should be administered in a room that is conducive to taking exams (i.e. adequate space between candidates; minimal noise). A few things that need to be considered are as follows:

  • Classroom style is preferred.
  • Tables need to provide 30 inches of working space per candidate, as space is required for all the papers.
  • Seating should be no more than 2 to a table (this requires at least 6-ft. long table).
  • The room must be comfortable, with enough lighting, in a quiet area, away from machinery, construction and traffic noise.
  • If the room has speakers for a public-address system, they should be shut off during the examinations. If this is not possible, the supervisor should notify the persons responsible for the system of the examination times and the importance of not having any interruptions.  Speakers for background music should also be turned off during the examinations.
  • Smoking is prohibited in the examination room.
  • There should be a clock, visible to all candidates, in the examination room. If a clock cannot be supplied, a blackboard or easel must be provided so the supervisor can indicate the elapsed time during the examination.
  • If possible, building and restrooms should be handicap accessible.
  • If possible, restrooms should be near the exam room.
