WHY I’M RUNNING FOR THE SOA BOARD
When I began my actuarial journey over 30 years ago, I never imagined that it would take me from the Caribbean to the US, Canada, South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
Today, I’m running for the SOA Board because I believe the challenges we face—AI, climate change, geopolitical and demographic shifts—demand broad experience and a global mindset.
I’ve been fortunate to serve our profession in many ways—as a Board member, curriculum developer, exam volunteer, and partner in an international consultancy. I’ve worked across life, health, pensions and general insurance, founded my own firm and served on Boards in professional and financial sectors. But what I’m most proud of is 40 years of continuous volunteer service with actuarial and accounting bodies—because I believe giving back is how we grow as leaders and as a profession. If elected, I will work to: Strengthen the SOA’s visibility globally and across sectors. Promote innovation in AI, education, and sustainability. Provide relevant and inclusive support for actuaries in traditional and emerging areas. Please make your voice heard. Voting starts on August 18; I’d be grateful for your support!
Questionnaire
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: Provide a brief description of your professional background and the type of work you have performed. Please include SOA and non-SOA volunteer and governing experiences including collaborative leadership. Explain how these experiences have prepared you as an Elected Board Member and qualify you in carrying out the strategic direction of the SOA.
After qualifying as an accountant and working with Price Waterhouse for six years, I began my actuarial career at the consulting arm of a Caribbean life insurer. I eventually led that firm and, following its acquisition by Buck Consultants, became Buck’s youngest partner at 27. In 1997, I founded KR Consulting. Today. with remote workers in Caribbean countries and subcontractors in Kenya and South Africa, my team provides actuarial services throughout the Caribbean and into Latin America. Our practice spans insurance, pensions, and banking, and we are now diversifying into sustainability reporting. I currently focus on life insurance and IFRS 17 implementation, often in jurisdictions with evolving regulations and limited data—requiring innovation, cross-border collaboration, and practical judgment.
Over my 30+ year career, I’ve served as Consulting Actuary to insurers (life, general, health) and pension plans in 20+ jurisdictions, and worked with US, UK, Canadian, Dutch, and international actuarial and accounting standards. This experience—bridging technical, regulatory, and cultural contexts—positions me to support the SOA’s strategic goals of global relevance, professional leadership, and public trust.
I’ve been an SOA volunteer since 1997, currently on the GI Exam and ILA Curriculum Committees and an Ambassador. I am a former President of the Caribbean Actuarial Association and chair its Technical Committee. At the International Actuarial Association, I’ve contributed to the Insurance Accounting Committee and Africa Taskforce and am a director of the International Association of Consulting Actuaries. I am a former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Trinidad & Tobago and have served on many boards including a Central Bank, Stock Exchange, Revenue Authority, and rural microfinance company. As a member of ACCA’s International Assembly, I contributed to the strategy of a global accounting body with similar challenges to the SOA. I regularly present at actuarial and accounting conferences and have contributed to technical papers ranging from pension legislation to the role of insurance in helping vulnerable populations adapt to climate change.
These roles reflect my long-standing commitment to collaborative leadership, technical excellence, and inclusive governance—principles that align closely with the mission and direction of the SOA.
