Elected Board Member
Elected Board members are responsible, in partnership with other Board members and staff, to lead the organization and the actuarial profession through implementation of the SOA Strategic Plan and by performing fiduciary, strategic and policy responsibilities.
This position carries a three-year term. All commitments are spread out between the Presidential officers and Elected Board Members. SOA eligible voting members will choose five new members to serve on the SOA Board. Find out more details in the job description and criteria.
New this year – International Board Member
The Board approved the Nominating Committee and Governance and Policy Committee’s recommendation to reserve one elected Board member seat in the 2024 election for an international member. This international Board member should live and have primary work focus outside of the U.S. or Canada.
President-Elect and Vice-Chair
The President-Elect and Vice-Chair is responsible for leading the Board, and in partnership with other presidential officers, Board members, and the Chief Executive Officer for leading the organization and representing the actuarial profession through implementation of the SOA Strategic Plan. They will assure the Board agenda addresses appropriate priorities and performs its fiduciary, strategic and policy responsibilities.
The President-Elect and Vice-Chair joins the Leadership Team for three years and devotes time to learning and preparing prior to becoming President and Chair. The President and Chair’s core commitments are approximately 40 days annually between in-person and virtual opportunities. Find out more details in the job description and criteria.
Nominee Checklist
Expression of Interest
Once the Nominating Committee publicly posts the call for nominations for Board elections, a Fellow can submit their name by completing the expression of interest form. The Nominating Committee reviews the nominees submitted.
Questionnaire
An important step in the nomination process is answering a series of questions that reflect your understanding and ability to demonstrate behaviors that exemplify criteria for open positions. If you are nominated, your questionnaire will be reproduced in the election ballot and posted on the SOA website.
Interviews
As a nominee, your interview will be with two members of the Nominating Committee to answer a series of questions. Interviews are generally 30-45 minutes long (but please block out 60 minutes), conducted virtually, and are recorded. Recorded interviews are confidential and only used by the Nominating Committee.
Background Checks and Conflict of Interest
Background checks (ABCD) and conflict of interest (COI) forms are required for President-Elect and Vice-Chair and Elected Board Member positions. Additional country-specific background check forms will be sent after expression of interest form is submitted. You are unable to appear on the SOA ballot without completing the information required.
