Central University of Finance and Economics Becomes the First Chinese University to be Recognized as a Center of Actuarial Excellence by The Society of Actuaries

Beijing, July, 18, 2018 -- The Society of Actuaries (SOA) announced it has designated the Central University of Finance and Economics’ (CUFE) actuarial department as a Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). CUFE joins the ranks of 31 other prestigious universities worldwide with this SOA designation, and becomes the first university in China to receive the honor.

College and university actuarial science programs can apply for the CAE designation, which acknowledges outstanding programs. In order to qualify for the designation, university programs must meet the eight rigorous criteria and specific CAE requirements. These criteria involve the degree, curriculum, graduate count, faculty composition, graduate quality, appropriate integration and connection to industry and the quality and quantity of research. Universities with this designation are eligible for CAE-specific education and research grants from the SOA.

As a global professional organization for actuaries, the SOA is committed to promoting the development of the actuarial profession in China. Through the CAE certification, the SOA aims to enhance actuarial research and intellectual capital development, encourage universities to play an integral role in advancing actuarial knowledge and build connections between the profession and top-tier actuarial programs and faculty.

“I am happy and proud that CUFE’s actuarial program is now named as an SOA Center of Actuarial Excellence,” said Wang Yaoqi, the principal of CUFE. “The SOA only approves highly qualified universities as CAEs after rigorous review of their actuarial programs. CUFE is dedicated to educating and graduating professional and well-trained actuaries who will provide specialized actuarial skills to the market.”

“On behalf of the SOA, we are pleased to designate CUFE as a Center of Actuarial Excellence,” said Ken Guthrie, Managing Director of Education at the SOA. “The actuarial science program at CUFE is one to be emulated by other institutions around the world and embodies our mission of advancing actuarial science. We’re proud of CUFE for becoming the first Chinese university to gain this recognition of excellence, and hope other Chinese universities follow suit.”
