Description: Global trends in both technology and regulation are causing US insurers to reflect deeper on their model risk management frameworks. The world has seen a rapid proliferation of AI-based tools accompanied with an overall increased usage of machine learning models, exacerbating model risk and reducing transparency in an unprecedented manner. This rising tide of AI means that it is imperative for US-based insurers to address these emerging risks within their Model Risk Management (MRM) frameworks. Regulation also continues to evolve in this space: in Canada, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) revised Guideline E-23 to instill more detailed model risk management standards; in Bermuda, the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) has published CP2 to add increased scrutiny on the data and models used by insurers. Insurers must react: MRM frameworks require prudent revisions to reflect these ever-changing landscapes of risk. Reassessing the core pillars of MRM frameworks - risk measurement, model development, validation, monitoring, and governance – is key to understanding the consequences of these evolving market changes on insurers’ risk profile. Overall, the inclusion of these new tools into the world of insurance necessitates a thorough examination of insurers’ MRM frameworks in order to align these new risks with core MRM principles. Description: When it comes to climate-related risks, what does the future hold? Will we see a rise in global temperature of 3 degrees Celsius or more, or can we keep it to less than 1.5 degrees? Will we see ambitious climate policies instituted globally in the near future, or will the status quo prevail, leading to irreversible changes to the climate and more severe physical risks? As actuaries, we are accustomed to planning for an uncertain future, but assessing the long-term impact of climate change poses a unique challenge. There are several public institutions developing scenarios like those above and others, which can help actuaries understand and assess the risks posed by a changing climate. Through scenario analysis, organizations can consider a range of possible outcomes to inform decision-making. Scenario analysis can be qualitative or quantitative, and there is no uniform framework that is currently being used by organizations that are studying the impact of climate change on their business. At the end of this session, participants will be able to: - Describe future climate scenarios. - Describe how actuaries can use scenario analysis to assess the impact of climate change and climate policies. - Explain why actuaries might use scenario analysis to understand climate risk.

Description: The United Kingdom makes public an impressive body of data about its population, its health system (the NHS), and the care which the NHS provides to the nation. This session will take the audience on a tour of many of these sets - with a focus on uncovering healthcare disparities. For context, a brief description of the NHS in England, population characteristics of England, and how social determinants of health (SDOH) are quantified will be given. With these as a background, we will explore data on chronic disease prevalence and incidence as well as physician performance against targets. We will present examples of health disparities from this data for certain conditions. Datasets of UK prescribing will be shown for further detail. The closing portion of this talk will present similar public domain US data - and how the UK body of information can assist in understanding health disparities in the US.
