Description: Actuaries have a good understanding of the insurance industry from products and distribution to risk management and financial reporting. However, the trend of actuaries in executive and senior management roles (besides the Chief Actuary role) seems to be trending downwards over the years. Join us as we discuss the perspectives of executives at insurance companies (e.g., CEO, CFO, CRO, COO) and what made them successful beyond the traditional chief actuary path. Gain insight as we talk about what skills and experiences actuaries should look to gain to be more successful in executive roles beyond the chief actuary role.

Description: Address issues in value-based contract accounting from an actuarial perspective. In Medicare and ACA business, what issues does risk adjustment present to value-based contract accounting? In Medicare, what issues do Part D present in value-based contract accounting and what are possible solutions? What are the issues in the use of provider stop loss in value-based contract accounting? Are there issues in the timeliness of claims in value-based contract accounting? Are we giving providers enough information for them to manage their population? How do we deal with deficit accounts? What are the pros and cons of capitation, gainshare, and full risk in value-based accounting?

Description: Almost half of recent FDA approvals have been for orphan drugs. This trend is expected to continue in 2023. Orphan drugs are priced more than 30 times higher than non-orphan drugs, therefore their cost burden in aggregate has the potential to overwhelm the budgets of payers, especially that of smaller health plans. Hear how the cost impact analysis for smaller health plans require different considerations than for a larger health plan when modeling the impact of rare diseases.
