Election Message:
I am honored to have been endorsed as a SOA Board election candidate by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Nomination Committee.
The idea of applying the board member of SOA came to my mind for quite some time now. Early this year, there is a strong inner voice told me it’s the time to do so. And such, I applied for it! But to be specific, there are several reasons behind this decision.
-
First and foremost, my career to-date include a wide range of actuarial areas, and practical experience in multiple geographical regions, which provided me with the ability, and lens to understand the current challenges, and up-coming opportunities for actuaries. Beside working in the traditional insurance/reinsurance companies in China and Canada, I also worked for the China Association of Actuaries (CAA), responsible for actuarial research and international communications. Now I’m with an insurtech company as a co-founder. With my unique and diverse experience, which span across industry, academic, semi-regulatory and fintech in multiple geographical regions, I truly believe, if I was elected, I can bring a new dimension, and new energy to the SOA.
-
Second, both my passion on volunteering, and the desire to contribute back to the society lead me to run for this election. Speaking of volunteering experience, I’m a key volunteer for a charity program that provide medical care insurance for kids in the rural areas in China for more 10 years. I am also a dedicated volunteer for different actuarial volunteer groups no matter where I was residing over my career. During these volunteering experience, I have learnt to be part of a team, consisting people from all around the world. If I was elected, I would like to proactively encourage, and improve the volunteering program to attract more actuaries to join the SOA volunteering opportunities, with a specific focus from the lens of Asia, which will also deliver the vision of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative.
-
Third, by looking back my career path, I’m always pursuing the actuarial fundamental questions and seeking the actuarial transformation. The development of data science and IT technical not only changes the actuarial world but also changes the whole world. There’s no way to keep the actuaries as they are for the last hundred years. Currently, as in the insuretech company, I work closely with the data scientist, design the actuarial business structures, and explain to the IT people who are more family with the new IT technics. This is a way to transform actuaries into the business leaders and to bring the actuaries to the next step by using the new tools. If I was elected, I will put on more effort on the actuarial transformation.
-
Last, during my time with the China Association of Actuaries, I organized the local actuarial exams, which allowed me to be connected with majority of the professors that are teaching actuarial science in China. Since then, I was frequently being invited to speak the students. If I was elected, I’ll keep listen to the voices from the students and professors, and enhance our educational efforts for the emerging changes to meet the needs of the new generations.
Brief description of current work:
I’m the co-founder of an insurtech company provides technology solutions to insurance companies, focusing on tailored and personalized risks pricing and product developments. I manage the development and execution of the strategic plan of the company. For daily work, I oversee the actuarial solution, data-driven researches & innovations, and reinsurance arrangement. Leading an insurtech company as an actuary provides me with the opportunity to merge my actuarial skillsets with advanced digital technology. This job is an adventure for me, providing new challenges every day which I enjoy a lot.
Primary Area(s) of Practice:
Life, Health, Insurtech.
Bio:
Professional:
I started my actuarial journey in a joint venture company in Beijing, Skandia-BSAM, aiming to learn the basic actuarial skills. Then I moved a local company to have a taste of the local company culture. After that I joined Munich Re, a reinsurance company, which provided me deeper actuarial technics. Thanks to the internal transfer, I was able to move to Munich Re Canada providing actuarial consulting services and overseeing the mortality experiences of north America. At that time, I found the common global actuarial language, especially under the education of SOA. So, the next step, I devoted myself into China Association of Actuaries (CAA), trying to bring more international practices in China and to build closer connections to other actuarial associations. Now I’m running an insutech start-up company as a co-founder, trying to merge my actuarial skillsets with advanced digital technology, which will and it is impacting the actuarial profession.
Volunteer:
- From 2011 to now, I’m the Board member and Chief Actuary for China Rural Kids Care (Volunteer), which is a charity program offering insurance coverages to the kids in rural area of China. There are more than 60 million RMB (around 10million USD) raised, and more than 1 million children covered by this program. This charity volunteer experience also gave the chance to know the angel investor and the current business partner which is the trigger of starting the current insurtech company.
