Actuarial Risk Management
Message One
The SOA needs to continue working to ensure a bright future for the actuarial profession in the age of artificial intelligence.
Message Two
Dear Members of the Society of Actuaries,
As I seek re-election to the SOA Board of Directors, I am passionate about the societal purpose of actuaries and the actuarial profession. Our work extends beyond the calculations we make; it touches lives and shapes the future. The integration of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the initiatives of the new SOA Societal Purpose Committee, and alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are pivotal in achieving this purpose.
Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
The actuarial profession must reflect the diverse society we serve. Inclusive hiring practices, cultural competence training, and the establishment of DEI policies are essential. Supporting Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and actively addressing biases in our work ensures equitable opportunities for all. Inclusive leadership practices that value diverse perspectives will enhance our profession’s impact and relevance.
New SOA Societal Purpose Committee Initiatives
The SOA Societal Purpose Committee is dedicated to advancing actuarial contributions to societal well-being. This includes supporting research that addresses critical societal issues such as climate change and public health. Recognizing volunteers who use their actuarial skills for societal benefit, promoting actuarial education in developing countries, and supporting financial stability in underserved communities are key initiatives. These efforts are crucial for ensuring that our work has a positive societal impact.
Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Actuaries play a vital role in addressing global challenges by aligning our practices with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our work in climate risk assessment, health and longevity initiatives, and inclusive insurance solutions directly contributes to these goals. Engaging in international collaborations and research projects enhances our ability to address these complex issues effectively.
The Impact of Climate Change on Actuarial Work
Climate change poses significant risks and opportunities for our profession. Actuaries play a crucial role in developing solutions for climate resilience and risk assessment. The SOA should support specialized training and research in climate risk management to prepare us for these challenges. I am dedicated to advancing our profession's role in addressing climate change through innovative risk management strategies.
Ethical Standards and Professionalism
Maintaining high ethical standards is paramount in our profession. Providing ongoing ethical training, establishing clear guidelines, and ensuring our work adheres to these standards reinforces public trust. Actuaries must consider the broader societal impacts of their decisions and strive to act with integrity and responsibility.
Community Engagement and Volunteering
Community engagement and volunteering offer actuaries opportunities to contribute their expertise to societal causes. Recognizing and celebrating volunteer contributions, encouraging participation in local and international projects, and highlighting the personal and professional benefits of volunteering are essential. Volunteering enriches our lives and strengthens our communities.
Educational Outreach and Public Awareness
Raising public awareness about the role of actuaries and their contributions to society is crucial. Educational outreach programs inspire the next generation of actuaries and promote actuarial science. Collaborating with schools, universities, and community organizations, and providing resources for educators, ensures a continuous pipeline of talented individuals entering our profession.
By focusing on these areas, we can ensure that the actuarial profession not only excels technically but also contributes meaningfully to societal well-being. Our work has the power to create a positive impact on the world, and it is our responsibility to harness this potential.
Thank you for considering my candidacy. Together, we can build a dynamic and impactful future for the actuarial profession, dedicated to advancing societal purpose.
Best regards,
Dave Ingram
