Message One
The Society of Actuaries must be RELEVANT. Relevant means “closely connected or appropriate”. We must be closely connected to our members and appropriate to the needs of the communities that we serve.
As the SOA we must continue to execute and expand upon our strategic plan. In addition to established communication channels, we must be sensitive to new opportunities to listen to our members – existing and potential – as they help us answer questions such as:
- What does the actuary of 2034 look like?
- How do we make the education process more relevant to the learners of tomorrow?
- How do we continue to morph to embrace data science and the all-pervasive “AI”?
- Are we at any point unknowingly making the playing field less instead of more even?
As an SOA educational and international actuarial volunteer of many years, I have a good understanding of actuarial education in many jurisdictions, and I am committed to keeping the SOA relevant to all our members.
As actuaries, it is our professional and moral duty to appropriately meet the needs of all the communities we serve. In my career, I have had the privilege to be a voice for underrepresented groups and developing markets which are disproportionately hit by crises, and which are often inadvertently mis-served by evolving global industry standards. The diversity of my professional experience as an accountant and actuary has given me a unique ability to see into the needs of multiple territories thus equipping me to be an advocate both toward and for the SOA.
As we continue to be confronted with rapidly changing demographics, geopolitics, technology, climate and social expectations, I want to work with fellow Board members to ensure that the Society of Actuaries remains connected, appropriate and RELEVANT.
Message Two
Hi – my name is Kyle Rudden and I am an endorsed SOA Board Candidate.
Voting began on August 19 and will continue until September 6. If you have not voted already, please take a look at the candidates and VOTE!
So, what does ‘endorsed’ mean? In a nutshell, it means I have the professional qualifications and experience to do the job. For me, that means 40 years’ work and volunteer experience with over 30 as a consulting actuary.
What do I bring to the table?
- Deep commitment to keeping the SOA relevant as we serve society
- Understanding the international environments that the SOA operates in
- Knowledge of how actuarial associations around the world are grappling with diversity, data science, AI and reaching the “Tik Tok” generation.
- Communication and consensus building skills – I listen well and work to find common ground for mutual development of different groups
- Wide experience as a UK certified accountant (FCCA) and consulting actuary (FSA, FIA, ACAS, FeTASK, CAA) in life and non-life insurance, pensions, and investments, particularly in developing markets.
- Familiarity with large firms (auditor with Price Waterhouse, principal of Buck Consulting) and small firms (my own, for 27 years)
- Understanding of actuarial education internationally, including being an SOA Examination volunteer for many years – Finance, Life, General Insurance
- Member of boards and committees of actuarial and accounting associations and non-profit entities, including the International Actuarial Association (Africa task force, Insurance Accounting, Vulnerable Populations & Climate Change, International Association of Consulting Actuaries)
- Mentor to students and younger actuaries on three continents.
- Ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences, speaking regularly on actuarial and accounting issues, including ethics, IFRS and sustainability.
