Disability Experience Studies

The SOA offers studies and table reports on individual, group and credit disability insurance for use by actuaries. Studies often contain many files for download, including multiple ZIP files, PDFs and Excel files. Table reports are often accompanied by Excel workbooks with complimentary materials.

    October
    The Group Disability Insurance Experience Committee of the SOA has completed their study of termination experience for the period 2009-2017. Included are a preliminary report, consolidated database (CDB), pivot tables and appendices.

    September
    Report to give actuaries practical information and guidance on LTD claim credibility for case level pricing and underwriting. In Stage 2 of the GLTD Credibility Study, the analysis was expanded using the industry data gathered during Stage 1.

    April
    This study analyzes the recovery and mortality experience for group life waiver claims during the period 2000 – 2015. This study updates the 2005 Group Life Waiver Experience Study which analyzed waivers for the period 1993 – 2002.

  • COVID Impacts on IDI Industry Based on 2022 Survey Results
    July
    In 2022, the Society of Actuaries’ Individual Disability Experience Committee/IDEC reached out to individual disability companies to report their experiences regarding the impact of COVID on their business. The goal of the survey was to gain high- level insight on how COVID has impacted the IDI business. The survey was not intended to be a full experience study, but rather a brief directional view of key business metrics. With a full data call expected for the IDI industry in 2023, more detailed results of COVID may become available.
  • 2005-2015 Experience Adjustments to the 2013 IDI Valuation Table Policy Incidence Rates

    This report discusses the development of policy reserves derived from the 2005-2015 claim incidence experience and the 2006-2014 claim termination experience from the Society of Actuaries’ report titled “2006-2014 Experience Adjustments to the 2013 IDI Valuation Table Claim Termination Rates, Revised April 2022.” This report also discusses modifications to the 2013 IDIVT incidence rates to reflect experience observed from 2005 to 2015.

    The Society of Actuaries Individual Disability Experience Committee has completed their study of claim termination experience for the period 2006-2014 and has produced a report that provides a practical set of changes to the claim termination rates (CTRs) of the 2013 Individual Disability Income Valuation Table to reflect key industry individual disability income (IDI) claim experience trends over this time period. The goal was to have the resulting 2006-2014 IDIET in a workable format to facilitate its implementation.

    The Society of Actuaries Individual Disability Experience Committee has completed their study of claim termination experience for the period 2006-2014 comparing trends to the 2013 IDI Valuation Table (2013 IDIVT) base termination rates. Included is the report, pivot table, and data file.

  • 2007-2015 US Individual Disability Income Persistency Study
    February
    The Society of Actuaries and LIMRA have sponsored a U.S. Individual Disability Income Persistency Study for the period 2007-2015 . This report examines lapse experience on individual disability income insurance products by various policyholder and product factors. The study can be used for industry benchmarking as well as for background information for product development and planning purposes.
