In Memory of Robert Cushing Winters, FSA, MAAA

Robert Cushing Winters, FSA, MAAA (Dec. 8 1931) of Ft. Myers, Florida passed away on Dec. 3, 2018. Winters was beloved husband to Patricia A. Martini (m. 1962 - her passing in 2005) and Roberta Jenkins (m. 2006). Father to Sally Vold (Philip Sutfin) and Beth Cushing (Mark Porter); stepfather to Eric (Lori), Brett (Christine), Kristen, and Lauren (Jeb).

Winters was a proud Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (SOA), a former member of the SOA Board of Governors, and past President of the American Academy of Actuaries. He was (at the time) the youngest person to ever pass the rigorous SOA actuarial exams.

Winters graduated from the Loomis School and Yale University, and he also earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Boston University. He was a former Chairman and CEO of the Prudential Insurance Company of America, past board member of the Business Round Table, the Mayo Clinic, the Episcopal Divinity School, Honeywell International, and his beloved Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Winters was a proud veteran of the Korean War. He was a sailor, scholar, brilliant mathematician, lover of puns and the Sunday Times crossword. A tone-deaf music-lover known for making a “joyful noise" at church. He memorized the scores to every Gilbert and Sullivan operetta and taught himself to speak proficient Japanese, German and French. He was ethical beyond belief, meticulous, sentimental and deeply caring.

Winters was a true New Englander with a sturdy exterior and a heart of gold. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be planned. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Boston Symphony Orchestra ( www.bso.org/brands/bso/contribute.aspx) or the Mayo Clinic Cancer Research Fund ( www.mayo.edu/research/centers-programs/cancer-research/supporting-cancer-research).
