Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) Host “Be an Actuary Month” to Introduce High School Students to the Actuarial Profession

February events coincide with national Insurance Careers Month

Schaumburg, IL, January 3, 2022 – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) have partnered to create four virtual events in February 2022, to inform high school students about the actuarial profession as a career choice. Held concurrently with national Insurance Careers Month, these free programs celebrate “Be an Actuary Month” and are designed to inspire students towards a math-related career path through interactive activities in a fun virtual environment. The program will feature:

    • Presentations by practicing actuaries describing “What is an Actuary” and “Why am I an Actuary?”
    • An introduction into the concept of risk with real world examples, led by actuaries and actuarial students.
    • A competitive Kahoot math game with prizes for the winners
    • A resource section for both students and teachers, including information on scholarships, college resources, and more.

A primary goal of “Be an Actuary Month” is to reach high school students embodying demographic groups currently underrepresented as actuaries, as the CAS and SOA have a long history of partnering on initiatives designed to diversify the pipeline for actuarial talent. Recent research commissioned by CAS, SOA and other partners has shown that underrepresented groups lack awareness and exposure to the career until later in their college years or even after college. This puts them at a disadvantage in comparison to other students. “Be an Actuary Month” is designed to help address this barrier to entry into the actuarial profession. The month-long series of events is an expansion of “Be an Actuary Day,” which the CAS and SOA first held for high school students in 2018.

“Be an Actuary Month” virtual events are funded jointly by the CAS and SOA, in coordination with other strategic partners, including The Actuarial Foundation, International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA), and the Organization of Latino Actuaries (OLA).

High school students, community college students, teachers and school counselors are welcome to sign up for any event. For more information or to register for events, visit BeAnActuary.org/HSevents.
