Description: Risk management techniques such as stress testing and setting capital targets are fairly well established for life insurers; however, the implementation of these techniques can vary considerably. A fundamental question is how to manage multiple valuation perspectives, and the list of possibilities keeps growing. Companies can potentially consider some or all of the following: U.S. reporting measures (Stat, GAAP), internal measures (EV, VNB, economic capital), international reporting measures (IFRS), rating agency models or other developing standards (ICS, NAIC group capital). This session will begin with a quick overview of the defining characteristics of different valuation frameworks. We will then provide more focused and practical considerations for managing risk and capital under different frameworks, using specific examples to highlight key trade offs.

Description: Because of the short-term nature of most health insurance products, the sophistication of insurers’ capital modeling tends to lag that of longer tailed life insurers. Additionally, some health insurers treat required capital modeling as a compliance exercise. However, there is considerable value to insurers who take more thoughtful approaches to capital modeling and integrate their capital modeling outcomes into the strategic decision-making process. Gain an overview of common required capital measures, including the advantages and disadvantages of each, and see a demonstration on how some capital measures are deficient for strategic decision-making. In the second half of the session, you will examine a case study of the considerations, design, implementation, challenges and outcomes of integrating a complex economic capital model into the strategic decision-making process.

Description: Climate change is making a significant economic impact into the work that actuaries do. Actuaries working in general insurance have been at the forefront of this work for many years. Now, actuaries in investments, pensions, life and health insurance as well as enterprise risk management are considering the risks of climate change and quantifying the impact of climate change in their modeling. The scope was defined as significant downside risk events experienced by Canadian nongovernmental organizations as reported in the first 10 pages of either Section A (Front) or Section B (Report on Business) of The Globe and Mail in a 2012 weekday (Monday-Friday) edition, as recorded in their online archives (“GlobeArchives”).

Description: The U.K. Pension Protection Fund (PPF) was established in April 2005 to protect the pensions of members of U.K. private sector defined benefit pension schemes that have insufficient assets and whose corporate sponsor fails. The fund takes over the pension scheme assets and assumes responsibility for the payment of compensation to the former members of the scheme. PPF is funded by a levy on the population of eligible schemes. The elements of the enterprise risk management of the fund have been developed by reference to practice within proprietary insurance institutions and other pensions funds; their application to this unique financial vehicle is the subject of this paper. The paper draws on references to relevant risk and actuarial work. It is designed to illustrate the application of principles and techniques to a real world example.
