Description: This meeting session, which occurred at the April 1982 Society of Actuaries meeting in Orlando, presented a look ahead as of 1982 at opportunities for actuaries in the 1980's and 1990's. Questions addressed by the panel included: i. Will traditional opportunities be reduced? 2. What non-traditional opportunities are available? 3. What changes are needed in our educational process? 4. How do we make non-traditional employers aware of actuarial skills and their value? 5. What will actuarial work be like? 6. Some perspectives on the situation in Canada as it moves toward more government ownership and control of financial security programs

Description: This article discusses the recently formed Committee on Futurism, and provides a definition of futurism and the purpose of the new committee. The author notes that “in October 1975 the annual meeting of the Society had the privilege of listening to Dr. Jay S. Mendell give an address on “The Actuary as a Futurist.” Prior to that occasion it is doubtful if many of the Society members had ever heard of being a Futurist or of Futurism.”

Description: This discussion focuses on the significant aspects of the 1958 mortality experience under group life insurance policies, the significant aspects of the morbidity experience with respect to the various forms of group sickness and accident insurance policies, and the recent experience under individual policies converted from group life insurance or group medical expense insurance plans.
