Description: This presentation is a teaching session, number 98TS, from the 2000 Annual Meeting of the Society of Actuaries, held October 15-18 in Chicago. The financial services industry is changing rapidly. Thirty years ago the industry made its profits from mortality and expense margins in premiums. Fifteen years ago it was interest margins on fixed annuities and universal life. Today profits come from fees on variable products, interest margin on fixed products, and mortality on term insurance. Description: This presentation is a general session from the joint Society of Actuaries/Casualty Actuarial Society Meeting held April 10-11, 1978 in New York City. The panelists provide an update on the current environment for risk classification in both property/casualty and life insurance areas, including regulatory development and court cases. The speakers note there are at least eleven Federal Agencies administering bans against sex discrimination, although not all of these deal with retirement plans or insurance, and that various states have issued regulations which affect our ability to classify risks, and that the issues, social more than actuarial, will not go away. It discusses a report of the Federal Trade Commission issued in 1979 related to insurance company practices and business with regards to life insurance. The report lists four consumer problems: low return on savings element, loss of money due to early lapse, high variation in costs of policies among companies suggesting inadequate price competition, ordinary insurance is expensive relative to death protection provided. The report also provided recommendations to correct these issues.
