Description: There has been significant discussion of PBR for Life Insurance, but there have also been significant changes in PBR for annuities recently; including VM-21, VM-22, and future VM-23. This session will discuss recent changes in PBR for annuities as well as what the future may hold.

Description: Gender recognition laws in the U.S. take on many forms and several states have either adopted laws or they are considering them. Learn more about how non-binary is defined, how the laws are changing to recognize non-binary gender identities and how insurance companies are addressing questions like: Do underwriting guidelines need to be gender specific? How do we address gender neutrality when gender impacts mortality? A panel of speakers will present their case studies and lead a discussion with attendees to start a dialogue about this emerging issue.

Description: The SOA recently launched the Mortality and Longevity Strategic Research Program with the release of a new study on the economic impact of opioid abuse. In this session, results of this study will be presented along with insights and plans for the future of the Program.

Description: The session will feature case study discussion of how insurers can improve their model architecture and data visualization to prepare for the increasing demands of the future. Actuarial data and analysis has long been limited by the complexity and diversity of historical systems. External pressure on insurers is higher than ever before, as new requirements take effect under PBR, GAAP Targeted Improvements, and IFRS17.

Description: The presenters will provide an update on discount rates developed from the expected return on assets used in going concern pension funding. They will include recent research on discount rates being used for U.S. public sector plans, U.S. Multiple Employer Pension Plans, and Ontario and British Columbia plans. A discussion of the emerging regulatory framework in Canada and the U.S. and changes to ASOP 4 and 27 will also be covered. Components of discount rates such as expenses and margins (PfADs) will also be covered.

Description: Key performance indicators (KPIs) are essential in order to monitor and communicate a life insurance companies’ financial results, and effectively manage the business. This presentation will illustrate how the currently used KPIs may develop and evolve with the adoption and implementation of IFRS 17. Will the IFRS 17 insurance revenue be an appropriate measure for growth? Will the profitability and new business value measures be different? The panelists will discuss the implications of IFRS 17 on the existing KPIs and the possible changes that may lay ahead
