Description: Research project that reviewed and inventoried the range of quality and efficiency measures that demonstrate the performance of hospitals and physicians. Besides outlining key areas of consideration for quality and efficiency measurement, this report also describes future opportunities for actuaries and other health professionals interested in this evolving area. Description: This session is based on research sponsored by the Society of Actuaries Mortality and Longevity Strategic Research Program, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries to develop new methods and tools to enhance current mortality modeling and measurement actuarial practices. The presentation will discuss research accomplishments to date including a new mortality dataset that subdivides the U.S. population by education level and provides insightful analysis on mortality inequalities and mortality by cause of death. Additionally, research currently being performed or planned will be explained.

Description: The so-called pension max life insurance marketing concept is generating a great deal of excitement among life insurance marketers. It's also received some skeptical reviews in the popular news media, the most recent being a Newsweek article by Jane Bryant Quinn in the April 4, 1994 issue. The marketing concept calls for electing an unreduced pension, that is, maximizing the pension, in lieu of electing a reduced contingent annuity [CA] or joint and survivor [J&S] option. Further, the marketing concept calls for the purchase of life insurance on the employee to substitute for the economic exposure created by not electing the CA or J&S option. Although the marketing concept is clear and simple, its economics continue to generate a great deal of discussion. This paper attempts to add some clarity to this issue. Description: Research project that assesses the accuracy of commonly used IBNR estimation methods for medical insurance over a wide range of scenarios. The methods are summarized, practical considerations in making the comparisons and the development of the data simulations for the comparisons are discussed.

Description: The article makes reference to how the intervention by government agencies and institutions into the financial marketplace are creating distortions. This artificial tampering into market mechanisms will likely result in major financial dislocations down the road as natural economic forces (coined by the term "invisible hand") eventually are allowed to come into play.
