Description: Statutory and GAAP metrics are useful for regulators, investors, and other external parties who require a consistent basis for viewing snapshots of companies at a point in time, however, their uses are more limited for managers who are tasked with making strategic decisions. Many insurers are turning to internally developed metrics such as value of new business (VNB) for better profitability insights at the point of sale and to understand how new business profitability changes over time. By leveraging existing models and reporting processes, insurers can reduce the additional effort involved, applying VNB toward applications such as pricing, capital allocation, and risk management. Discuss key considerations for developing and using VNB. Begin with a brief overview of VNB, including how VNB addresses specific shortcomings of Stat and GAAP. Next, discuss applications of VNB for life and annuity business and conclude with some implementation case studies.

Description: Under U.S. GAAP long-duration targeted improvements (LDTI), some non-VA annuity products contain features scoped in as 'market risk benefits' (MRBs), which are required to be measured at fair value. For U.S. insurers, the question becomes 'How does the emerging principle-based reserving framework for non-variable annuities compare to the fair value framework for MRBs under LDTI?' See a comparison between these two new measurement models, highlighting some of the key considerations due to the added complexity of these calculations, to help companies strategically plan for their future state.

Description: It is time to'go live with ASU 2018-12, otherwise known as long-duration targeted improvements (LDTI). For companies that have single premium limited payment contracts, additional work will be necessary under LDTI if the contracts are currently utilizing a break-even discount rate to defer the excess of the gross premium over the net premium, i.e. the deferred profit liability. This is mainly driven by requirements under LDTI to update for actual experience and review assumptions at least on an annual basis. This session is designed to cover LDTI implications specific to carriers of single premium limited payment contracts, including changes to how deferred profit liabilities are calculated going forward under LDTI and their impact to financial statements. Description: This article analyzes two common interpretations of SOP 03-1 in determining the guaranteed minimum death benefit GMDB liability in a variable annuity contract, and it analyzes the resulting impact on the initial GMDB reserve and on the volatility of GAAP earnings as actual experience emerges. This analysis could be applied to the guaranteed minimum income benefit GMIB, guaranteed minimum accumulation benefit GMAB, guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefit GMWB and other guaranteed benefits in a variable annuity contract that are subject to SOP 03-1, and the conclusions would be similar.

Description: This session will have two sections: General consideration of IFRS17 implementation for VA writers and reinsurers A case study of IFRS17 implementation for a reinsurer The first section will go over VFA and GM approaches that are available for VA writers. Both approaches have their own challenges. We will highlight some of the challenges and how to approach/overcome them. Additionally, we will discuss how hedging/ALM can help smooth the transition. The second section will go over the details of implementation process of a VA reinsurer. The case study will explore valuation challenges unique to reinsurers assuming business that would otherwise be valued under the VFA. It will also go over some of the modeling difficulties, project management, and database requirement.
