Description: In the past few years, SoA members and leaders have raised questions about future needs for actuarial skills, globalization of markets, and the appropriate focus of the present education system in preparing actuaries for their professional futures. As a consequence of these questions, the SoA Board of Governors set aside a major portion of its January 1994 meeting to discuss the education of actuaries, with primary consideration being given to a longer horizon than the immediate future. Chris Daykin, representing the Institute of Actuaries, reported that the Institute was incorporating fundamental changes to its basic Education and Examination [E&E] system. These changes were aimed at focusing more on fundamental principles and away from details of practice.

Description: Over the past couple of years, the Society of Actuaries has altered radically its perception of its research role. An Issues management process has been put into place to identify and prioritize research activities. A management process has been established to approve research projects and to oversee progress. With such a structure In place a number of research projects have been initiated. The research activities of the SOA go well beyond new research projects. A revitalization of the experience studies and library activities also has occurred. In addition, several special projects which deserve mention have been undertaken. This article provides a status report on a list of research projects, experience studies, library activities and other projects. To keep pace with technological change, ARCH now enters its next stage of evolution. Beginning with the 2001.1 issue, ARCH will be available electronically on the Society of Actuaries' web site www.soa.org. No printed accumulation of these articles will be available in book form.

Description: This is a letter to Professor Ralph Garfield in response to his contribution to the 1978.1 issue of ARCH. It answered his question concerning the non-applicability of an identity.

Description: The paper gives two criteria for fit and uses two different criteria to transform an initial graduation into one with better fit. It is shown that the two sets of criteria give the same transformation. The mathematical relationships between the two sets of criteria are then derived. It is clear from those relationships that when one set of criteria is small, the other set is small [but reasonably the same]. Some general comments on various measures of fit are made.
